Meaning & context

Used to describe something disliked particularly someone’s snide facial expression or bitchy attitude. Possibly related to yeokgyubda (역겹다), meaning nauseating or revolting. Distantly related to the English expressions: “wipe that grin off your face,” and “what the fuck are you looking at?”

The Waiter

MinHee

I’m so hungry. Where is that waiter? He’s so slow.

HeeYeon

And he was so ddiggeopda. No respect! How dare he!

Arum

Awe, come on. Give the guy a break. Maybe he’s just having a rough day. Let’s enjoy the meal.

MinHee

No, he was really ddiggeopda. Doesn’t he know how pretty I am? How can he show me such an ugly face?!

Waiter

Here’s your food ladies, so sorry for the delay. And the dessert is on the house. Enjoy your meal.

Riul’s Absence is a Mystery

Neither an R nor an L in sight.

What happened to riul’s ㄹ might?

Initial R or L when final,

riul’s ㄹ absence is a mystery,

missing in the pages of this book’s history.

Few words begin with its ㄹㄹㄹ rolling sound

So skip to mium ㅁ and have another round..

Two Lips Meet to Merge Complete

Like two lips separating soundly

Making a mandible of mium ㅁ roundly.

Mumbling a mantra as it stared

into the madness of the storm squared.

Ma-ma-ma 마마마 from the 마움 ma-eum

of heart, of home.
